I didn't realize Thorfinn was present while Einars village was being pillaged! I will have to carefully rewatch all of season 1 again because I am sure this will not be the only parallel to the story. How powerful. Also an edit if you rewatch S1 E6 of Vinland saga the village that Askellads men pillage looks very eerily close to Einars village. Which would mean that both Thorfinn and Einar are about the same age. Just watch the end of this episode and the middle of the other episode. And let me know what you guys think ❤
I got CPTSD as well due to childhood trauma and domestic violence. This arc was a very healing experience for me. It is rare to get a protagonist who is in the same state as I am, and is tasked to heal and move forward from the trauma that they have. The author gets it. He gets how important love in close relationships is, how nurturing takes effort while violence is easy.
Edit: also, Thorfinn wasn't present when Einar's village was attacked. In S1, remember when the English started attacking norse settlements in England? Which made the danes retaliate, and was an excuse to wage war for the king. That's the reason Thors was called to arms. Einar's village was a norse settlement that had lived in England for a couple generations. The first time they got attacked, it was by the English. Thorfinn was with Askeladd's men who are danes, so they didn't attack the same village. I think they just showed the first time Thorfinn ever bared witness to the atrocities committed during pillaging, the first time he was exposed to the horrors Einar was also exposed. To show they were in a similar position, I think, but went into drastically different trajectories in life; only to end at the same place: both broken by war and violence.
I haven't rewatched S1 in a while but the point you made about Thors not being a master because he still had his sword is such a great parallel to how the manga is nowadays.
I am new here and I came expecting a great reaction and analysis of the episode (which I got). But I did not expect the rest of the video to have such an impact on me. I don't really have anyone in my life that can have this type of conversation with me so it really resonated with me. You come across as very wise and put some things into words that I have always believed but not known how to talk about. And as it all relates to the show you are very ahead of the game with the themes and developments of this season. Vinland from the beginning has been about striving to be better. The message is perhaps one of the most important of any series or movie or book of this era. Anyways I really enjoy this channel 🙂
I've been subscribed for a while now. I just want to say I love the intro of this video. A lot of people find it very hard to relate to people who have had tough upbringings. In a way it can make us feel bitter and indifferent to the world. But I love what you said about perspective. It really does take a strong person to understand that everybody's experiences and perspectives are different. If we can understand this, we can find peace in ourselves by not comparing ourselves to , or by creating the need to be equal to others. Improving ourselves should never be about the destination. The journey is what changes us. Here for you

Personally, I've had a few panic attacks in my life. Recently I had probably the worst one I've ever had. I was just starting my day and suddenly it overwhelmed me. I remember thinking to myself "I'm going to die, I'm going to die." Once it subsided I was in a fog the rest of the day. I know I'll have them again, there's no magic cure for it. However, I'm beginning to understand the truth that while it is all consuming in the moment it is just that, a moment. It does not need to define our day even if it is a part of it.
In regards to the episode, we see that Thorfinn has yet to confront his past. His past is continually slinging arrows and piercing swords into him and he lets it happen. Once he can look eye to eye with it, acknowledge it, then he will begin to heal and become more like Thors was striving to be.

The idea of working so hard for your freedom is quite interesting, there will be many days when they feel like quitting or something… so am interesting to find out how long will "freedom" drive Einar & also what drives Thorfinn.
Yeah Thorfinn looks lost or like someone without purpose, which is sad, but as someone who has social anxiety… I love that Thorfinn is comfortable with being alone, by himself. I find it hard to be comfortable in social places, unless am with friends or family members.
